The Plan
The plan is very simple. I plan to sell everything I own and purchase a boat with the mindset that I will travel as far as I can with the limited money in my pocket.
I have dreamed to travel for a long time. I planned for several years to load up my 1972 VW Bus and drive around the country and into Mexico/Canada. When I first started the project, gas prices were barely $2.00 a gallon. Once most of the expensive work was done on the bus, gas prices increased another $1.50 and not limit seems to be in sight.
With prices of everything going up and up, I looked to ways to travel for extended periods of time that allowed me to carry a good amount of supplies and more importantly, my dog. I considered traveling by bike with trailor for my dog. I was introduced to a few bikes with motors that achieve 175 miles per gallon, but I remember back to the times traveling in Mexico and seeing the filthy dirty long distance bike travellers, I knew that would be out of the question.
As the little map shows, I plan to work my way across the Gulf of Mexico from Houston to Florida. I have read the travel from Texas to Florida is a adventure in itself with all the oil wells. Once in Florida, I will finish up any work on the boat that might need to be addressed while still in the country. From Florida, we will head down through the Bahamas and around the tip of Cuba. After a few days in Cuba we will head over to Jamaica. Depending on forcasts for Hurricane season, we might wait it out in Jamaica or head to Panama.
